While the rest of America is mourning the deaths of police officers and young men killed by police, Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have decided to make it rain gossip columns with the latest installment of their on-again/off again feud. Only this time Kim K just might have won the war.
Just to refresh your memory, West released a song called “Famous” with the following words: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that bitch famous.” West said he ran the song by Taylor during a phone call and she consented to her name being used. But Taylor apparently objected to being called a bitch. When she won a Grammy for album of the year, she threw shade on Kanye. “I just want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.”
Taylor’s disc came just days after her publicist claimed Taylor cautioned Kanye about releasing a song with a “misogynistic message.” But did she? Kim K and Kanye insisted that they had Taylor on tape agreeing to the song. And sure enough, Kim released the video on Snapchat showing Taylor talking it out with Kanye. Far from saying he shouldn’t release the song, Taylor gives her approval to the line about sex and agrees that Kanye in some small way made her famous by interrupting her VMA speech in 2009.
“You honestly didn’t know who I was before that. It doesn’t matter that I sold 7 million of that album before you did.” (Humble-brag!) Taylor tells him to “Go with whatever line you think is better. It’s obviously very tongue-in-cheek either way.” She later says it’s flattering.
So Taylor’s reaction to all this is to assert she did not consent to being recorded on the phone. More importantly, she says she clearly did not consent to the use of the word “bitch.”
Kim K is a master of the gossip game. She created an entire empire based on her ability to tweet photographs of her rear end and make sex tapes with ex-boyfriends. But Taylor is also a masterful player of the game. Her controlling nature and harem of girlfriends enable her to approach every situation with the confidence that she can control the narrative. Not this time, however.
Taylor’s main play in has been to cast herself as the innocent victim in every situation. She tried that here but it lacks credibility. Objecting to the word “bitch” is splitting too many hairs. She wasn’t upset by the sex line but couldn’t take the word “bitch?” Most people don’t buy it, especially since she knows how rap songs typically play out and the words she used. She got owned.
How will this impact Taylor’s gossip game going forward? Well, she definitely needs some new moves. She dumped Calvin Harris and took up with Loki aka Tom Hiddleston, the internet’s self-proclaimed boyfriend. The two have been on a media blitz, with plenty of make out sessions being captured by the paparazzi lenses. Who do you think called them? Taylor’s team. This brings up an issue that Taylor actually raised when she talked to Kanye last year: she states she is on the verge of being overexposed. Almost a year later, it’s safe to assume she is in fact overexposed and everyone is tired of Taylor and needs her to just go away for a while.
When she comes back, Taylor would be well advised to drop the innocent victim play, and also the “oh my gosh, I won an award, I am so surprised” pose. She is not that great of an actor. It’s time to act like a grown up and own your genius and your flaws. Or is all of this just a well-orchestrated event by all three of them to stay in the tabloids? We don’t know.
